A Legacy of Leadership

AN INCREDIBLE TEAM

Long Ago…

Christopher Starz presented an idea for the Northpoint Wakeboard & Water Ski School, held at Camp Nicolet on the shores of Franklin Lake for campers wanting to specialize in wakeboarding and skiing. Supplementing the focused lessons, campers would also participate in high adventure sports; such as mountain biking, paintball, and Outpost Capture The Flag as part of their experience. In 2004 Chris purchased the Moomba Mobius wakeboard boat, and the wakeboard lessons began. The following summer, 2005, Chris trained for Wisconsin wakeboard competitions, and offered high-level lessons to both Nicolet campers and local riders looking to hone their skills.

Chris’s life adventure ended all too early. In spring of 2006 he passed away in an automobile accident, while driving in a remote section of Wyoming. Georgi and Jeremy Starz, his mother and older brother, chose to honor Chris’s life and legacy by creating Northpoint Adventures; born out of Chris’s original Northpoint Wakeboard & Water Ski School vision. Northpoint Adventures began offering wilderness trips to Nicolet campers in 2009, and made these trips accessible to participants outside the Camp Nicolet community in the years that followed.

“Camping & Tripping” is a program fundamental to the Nicolet experience for decades and is widely recognized by alumni from the 40s through the 2000s. Northpoint Adventures expands on this original camp program, with specific Northpoint Adventures branding and an increased offering of tripping opportunities and adventure programs.

Traditional Camp Nicolet trips, like Peshtigo River Whitewater Rafting, Sylvania Wilderness Canoe, Porcupine Mountains Backpacking, and Apostle Islands Sea Kayaking supplement an offering of trips developed for Northpoint, including Pictured Rocks Backpacking, Devils Lake Rock Climbing, and Rocky Mountain Backpacking. Other trips like Super Porkies Backpacking, Voyageurs Wilderness Canoe, and Isle Royale Backpacking – which have unique histories with Camp Nicolet specifically – round out Northpoint’s offering of trips and programs.

Northpoint is managed by long-time trip leader Jeremy Starz, and staffed by a host of experienced and qualified trip leaders each season – some of whom grew up as campers on Camp Nicolet and Northpoint Adventures trips. We’re proud of our legacy and of Christopher’s vision. High school-age participants report writing college entrance essays about their wilderness experiences. Others indicate how much confidence a week on a trip has built. Our trips positively impact the lives of trippers and leaders year after year, and equip participants with knowledge and skills for continued adventuring into adulthood. Step outside your comfort zone; choose a trip, and let the adventure begin!
